space is there, and we're going to climb it
Project Starts Fri 8th
"No man can fully grasp how far and how fast we have come" (JFK, 1962)
It is 50 years since NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was created.
In 50 years there have been over 150 human space flights. Some we remember, lots we don't.
I want to remake them. All of them. Every single flight. I want to think about hopes and fears. About dreams. About simpler times. About faraway worlds. I want to think about history, about war. I want to think about someone out in space, further away than anyone has ever been. I want to think about looking at the Earth like a tiny glowing marble. When did we stop wanting to be astronauts?
The project will begin with a recreation of John Glen's 4hr 55min first manned orbit of the Earth. I shall be orbiting Forest Fringe from 9.47am till 2.42pm, somewhere out in Edinburgh. Over the course of the mission you will be able to call me from the venue and find out where I've got to. I'll describe a bit of Space for you.
After that it will be up to you, to anyone. We'll work chronologically. Everyone who wants to will be given a flight and asked to recreate it. Any way you want; in a drawing, in writing, in photographs, by taking a walk, taking a drive, by making a show, by drawing in chalk on a wall.
We have two weeks. We'll remake them all.
