For the last few years we’ve been exploring a range of ways in which we can recreate some of the collaborative, adventurous atmosphere of Forest Fringe’s Edinburgh programme beyond the limits of the festival itself. As part of that aim, in Spring 2010 we first created the Forest Fringe Microfestivals, bringing together a real range of unusual works to create a miniature travelling festival that visited BAC, Bristol Old Vic, National Theatre Wales and the Arches in Glasgow.

Now we’re taking this idea a few steps further and collaborating with Culturgest in Lisbon to create our first ever International Microfestival, a totally new way for emerging artists and unusual performances to travel beyond the UK. For one week in February we’ll be bringing a host of Forest Fringe artists to Portugal, exploring unusual spaces across Culturgest’s remarkable home and filling them with performances, works-in-progress, intimate encounters and installations. The artists involved include Action Hero, Search Party, Kieran Hurley, Deborah Pearson, Tania El Khoury, Bryony Kimmings, Mamoru Iriguchi and Jenna Watt.

We hope this will be the first of many such adventures, creating a new international context in which artists can gather to explore new ideas and present daring and unconventional theatre.
