Edinburgh Festival 2011

Forest Fringe
15 – 27 August 2011
The Forest Cafe, Bristo Place, Edinburgh

This year marks half a decade in Edinburgh for Forest Fringe. Since we started we’ve constantly tried to explore new ways of making unlikely and adventurous things happen in Edinburgh and this year is no different.

Below is our full programme for this summer. Please have a look around. As always all Forest Fringe events are by donation only and you can just turn up to experience them. If you prefer to book in advance, then we’ll soon be able to do so.

Core Artists

This year we’re dramatically changing the way Forest Fringe is run. We’ve chosen a small group of artists whose work inspires us and excites us; work that we believe is doing difficult and important things. Each of those artists is being offered the chance not just to show their work at Forest but to collaborate with us to make the festival happen. Some of these artists we’ve worked with a lot before, others are totally new to Forest Fringe. We hope they represent a fascinatingly diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives that can be brought to bear on putting this summer’s festival together.

Jerwood Curatorial Projects

In addition to presenting their own work, these core artists have been given a unique opportunity to be intimately involved in managing and curating the whole of the Forest Fringe programme. With the generous support of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation we’ve been able to offer each artist a chance to create a totally new, experimental curatorial project for Edinburgh this summer. What they’ve produced in response is an incredible array of events, from a live art massage booth to a day-long event exploring protest, revolution and the Arab spring.

The Full Programme

Alongside these projects we have an incredible line-up of other artists and events across the two weeks of the festival, including new Edinburgh versions of cult performance events Live Art Speed Dating and the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society, a workshop by the legendary Complicte and Edgelands, a major new conference inviting people from across the arts and beyond to gather together to think imaginative and dynamically about the state of the world.

If you placed all the flyers in Edinburgh during August end to end, they’d stretch from here to the moon and back. That’s not a fact but it could be true. It’s also not true that there are more flyers in Edinburgh during August than there are millimetres of rain. There are, however, a hell [...]
