Getting involved with Forest Fringe is very simple.
All our activities are orientated around our yearly Edinburgh Festival programme. This is our opportunity to work with new artists and introduce them to the Forest Fringe community.
Each year our Edinburgh programme is curated by the core Forest Fringe team of Andy Field, Deborah Pearson and Ira Brand. We try to ensure we have as varied a programme as possible, bringing together a range of different forms and practices, and a mixture of regular Forest Fringe artists alongside those we’ve never worked with before. There are no hard and fast rules, but generally we are most interested in work that is formally adventurous and unusual, whether it thinks of itself as live art, theatre, dance, installation or anything else.
The offer we make to every artists in Edinburgh is the same. By being part of Forest Fringe:
- We provide you with space for your show for free
- We will provide you with somewhere to stay if you require it
- We try to provide all the technical support you need, including a technician to operate your show
- We will give you space in our programme and on our website to talk about what you’re doing with us
- We will do what we can on your behalf to ensure you have press and promoters come and see your work
- We will try and ensure that you are free to present your work in whatever way you want, for however long you want
In return we ask that you help us to make the festival happen by volunteering some time to working on the box office or front of house for other shows at the venue. Forest Fringe is not a business. We do not get paid for making the festival happen in Edinburgh each year. We are a community of artists working together to make a space for ourselves in the difficult commercial environment of the Edinburgh festival – those people who have the best time with us are those that understand this and are excited to be a part of it.
Anyone who is interested in being part of Forest Fringe is encouraged to get in touch to tell us a bit about their work and what specifically they hope to do in Edinburgh – you can reach us on any of the email addresses at the bottom of this page. If you want to invite us to see your work we’ll always try and make it along, though there are only three of us and these aren’t our full time jobs, but we’ll do what we can.
If you’re not sure if your work is right for Forest Fringe, one of the best ways of finding out is to come up to the festival and experience it for yourself. Hang out, have a drink, see some work and tell us about yourself. We like meeting new people.
Alongside our artistic programme we’re also always, always keen to hear from people who might be interested in volunteering at the festival. Each year we have a team of volunteers who work closely with us to make the whole thing happen. We hope it’s always a worthwhile and interesting experience – exhausting and inspiring in equal measure. If you’re interested in finding out more please get in touch.
Thanks very much and we look forward to hearing from you!
